Standing as the only remaining ancient wonder of the world, the Great Pyramid of Giza is a top touristic destination. Located at the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, it may seem a little difficult to travel round the world to get there. Fortunately there are other pyramids around the world (not so great and not so old as those in Giza) which might still consider visiting.

Often overshadowed by Giza's better known monuments, the Pyramids of Meroe are among Africa's forgotten treasures. Located 250 km north of Sudan's capital, Khartoum, accessing the structures will require a trip on public transport to the nearest town, then a 4WD hire to the site. 

Most of the pyramids here look like they have being bitten off at the top, one after the other. This vandalism was as a result of 19th century treasure hunters in search of gold. The pyramids sits above a simple tomb chamber, which is dug into the rock below.

The best time to visit if from October to March, don't attempt during summers because the desert heat becomes intense at that period.

Cholula is located on the outskirts of Puebla, the capital city of Puebla State and is 3 hours southeast of Mexico City by road. This pyramid is so enormous and overgrown, it could be mistaken to a hill. It spans about 160, 000 sq m at the base (which is the largest pyramid on the planet) and was built over a period of a 1000 years. If you're a fan of Indiana Jones, you can relieve your fantasies by exploring some of the 8 km of tunnels that burrow into the heart of the massive structure.

Brihadishwara Temple, India

Located in Thanjavur, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, this magnificent temple, known colloquially as the "Big Temple", represents the architectural pinnacle of Tamil Chola empire. This site is now considered a UNSECO World Heritage Site and is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. This stands as one of the largest temples in India standing at 66 m tall.

Getting to the nearby city of Thanjanur is a 9-hour bus or train ride south of Chennai and the temple is just a walk from the train station in Thanjanur. Check out the reviews.

This pyramid was mainly as a result of the spread of the Egyptian culture in the late 30 BC. Roman magistrate Caius Cestius was impressed by the pyramids that he decided to build one which will eventually serve as his burial grounds. It stand 36 m tall. 

Located in south-central Rome, a stone's throw from Porta San Paolo train station. Any time of the year is preferable to visit the site.
